Food insecurity continues to be a critical issue for families and individuals across Mid Scotland and Fife, with increasing demands on foodbanks reflecting this.
I am working to address the drivers of poverty in our communities by calling for the scrapping of Universal Credit and the maximisation of benefits as part of action to better support those in poverty. In addition, as part of measures to address inequality, we must see action to ensure the right to available, accessible and adequate food.
The Scottish Government has indicated it plans to introduce legislation on food policy to Parliament – the Good Food Nation Bill. This Bill offers an opportunity to embed the right to food in policy and practice by enshrining within law a right to food for everyone in Scotland.
Following Challenge Poverty Week, I am asking you to sign up to a pledge calling for the right to food to be enshrined in law. I will be writing to the Scottish Government calling on them to use the forthcoming Good Food Nation Bill to make a commitment to a right to food as part of that legislation and highlighting support across the region for this.
