2016 Coalfields Home Internationals

I’m pleased to support the 2016 Coalfields Home Internationals – which take place at the end of this month – with a motion in Parliament. Good luck to all teams taking part, including the teams from Benarty and Alloa, in my region.

I lodged the motion after meeting with staff at the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in their offices in Alloa last week. I was pleased to catch up with the team and hear about the work they are doing to support former coalfield communities across Scotland. Continue reading

Claire calls for Fife MSPs to vote for a ‘Frack Free Fife’

Tomorrow the Scottish Parliament can vote for a ban on fracking in Scotland after Scottish Labour submitted an amendment to a Government motion that calls for the ban to be introduced.

I have been campaigning for some time for a Frack Free Fife and this week offers the perfect opportunity for all Fife politicians to unite behind that goal.

Currently the Scottish Government has stopped short of implanting a full ban on fracking, introducing a moratorium (a short term pause) on the process instead. This is despite repeated calls from Scottish Labour, the Lib-Dems and the Green’s for an outright ban.

The Scottish Government can take decisive action against UCG and fracking in Fife and we know that from community groups, to national environmental organisations, to Fife Council there is support for an outright ban. Continue reading

Fife flying into playoffs

Today in Parliament I celebrated Fife Flyers success in securing a playoff spot in the Elite Ice Hockey League, following their dramatic double header victories over rivals the Braehead Clan.

I am delighted that two fantastic results at the weekend have secured the Flyers place in the playoffs and I hope they can now go on and beat Dundee and win a playoff weekend spot in Nottingham.

I congratulated the team by lodging a motion, which can be found below, in the Scottish Parliament following Flyers 5-4 shootout victory in Braehead on Saturday and 4-1 win on Sunday at the Fife Ice Arena. Continue reading

Totally Locally in Burntisland

Last week I was delighted to be asked to launch Burntisland’s Totally Locally Campaign. The event which was launched with a dance mob and an unveiling of the map of the town aims to promote the high street in Burtnisland.

Totally Locally has been successful throughout the UK having being initially launched in West Yorkshire and will hopefully be a positive experience for the town.  It is a great opportunity to promote local businesses that have signed up and boost footfall in the high street.

Award Winning Bakers

Recently in Parliament I raised the success of Fife’s Bakers at the 2013 Baker of the Year awards. I lodged a parliamentary motion that has since picked up the support of MSPs from across the major parties. A full list of who has supported and the motion itself can be found on my parliament work page.

The 2013 Baker of the Year awards was a great success for bakers from across Fife as many left  with a host of awards and commendations highlighting the quality and success of the industry in the Kingdom. Continue reading

Dan Watson wins James Dyson Award

Claire Baker lodged Motion S4M-03951 on the 30th of August:

That the Parliament warmly congratulates Dan Watson, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, on being named winner of the UK James Dyson Award; understands that his SafteyNet system is designed to make fishing more sustainable by offering smaller fish an escape route from trawl nets through escape rings that are fitted to the cod-end of existing nets; notes that the rings light up to act as an “emergency exit” sign for the fish; hopes that this can lead to a decrease in discards; understands that Dan will now be competing against finalists from 17 other countries to win the international award, and wishes him all the best in the competition.
